ALIVE & Kicking Goals! is a multi award-winning youth suicide prevention project that promotes strong and healthy living. AKG is based in the Kimberley, Western Australia. It aims to reduce the high suicide rate among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth in and around Broome through peer education workshops, one-on-one mentoring, and counselling. The project is initiated, managed, and led by Aboriginal people in the Kimberley.

We believe together as one mob, that we all deserve to be in control of our own lives and by empowering our mob through lived experience and storytelling, we walk the journey together.

The project involves a range of activities that are delivered by staff and volunteer youth leaders to their peers. Young people are educated about suicide prevention, positive lifestyle choices, and hope about the future.

AKG’s 4 main programs

  • Life Promotion Program – an educational DVD developed by local Indigenous women who are now known as the Women’s Reference Group.
  • Alcohol, drugs and tobacco awareness workshops – discussions, brainstorms and activities which target conversations like; how to reduce risks when drinking, how can we help a friend struggling with these issues and negative factors of alcohol, drugs and tobacco use.
  • Mens suicide prevention & awareness – a DVD workshop has 3 main speakers featured in the film, who talk about their experiences with depression, suicide, help seeking and how they dealt with it. These tough topics are broken down with light hearted scenes to keep it balanced.
  • Living Deadly Program – workshops exploring the cycle of grief that is experienced in the Kimberley region, and strategies including goal setting, communication, anger management and emotional intelligence.
